The George family lived in Griffin, Georgia where Rev. George was a minister of the Episcopal Church. His son, Charles H. George, enlisted in 1861 in a Georgia regiment which was stationed near Norfolk, Virginia. In May 1862, he received a commission in a battalion of sharpshooters of the 5th Georgia Infantry, stationed in Mississippi. Officially organized in 1786 in Liberty County, Georgia, as an independent troop, this cavalry soon became known as the Liberty independent Troop. It is the oldest cavalry troop in Georgia.
